Optimizing R&D and CMR functions for new therapy area expansion
CASE STUDY
Successful implementation of our recommended R&D and Clinical/Medical/Regulatory
operational changes in Northern European region and, subsequently,
adopted across entire European organisation.
3 month project.
Client
This large, well-established pharmaceutical company was exploring a new molecule’s clinical potential in several new therapy areas.
So the company needed to quickly establish its medical and clinical presence across several countries in Northern Europe.
Challenge
The decision to enter a new therapeutic area is a major one for small and large pharma companies alike. Corporate leadership (and other key stakeholders) need to be convinced that you can build the right regional Clinical and Medical cross-functional collaboration at the affiliate level. This new set of therapy-area competencies also needs to fit within the existing company structure and culture.
In this case, our client was a top-20 pharmaceutical company who has enjoyed market leadership in its existing therapy areas for several decades. So, the client was not used to establishing a medical and clinical presence among key medical stakeholders in novel therapy areas.
They approached InnoStrat for support with identifying the right professional profile for a new Medical Lead to drive the Clinical and Medical teams in Northern Europe, in preparation for launch in the new therapy areas.

Solution
Two InnoStrat team leaders specializing in organisational restructuring, talent recruitment, clinical-development strategy and implementation at both global and local levels.
Result
We interviewed all R&D/Clinical/Medical staff within the major target markets in Northern Europe to gain insights into the existing organisational set-up and to identify areas for improvement to support integration and performance of the new Medical Lead.
We used the organisational audit findings to also define the professional profile and personality type that would fit this set-up, and how the reporting lines should be adapted to support a successful start for the new hire.
We identified the target talent profile for a new Medical Lead role.
We conducted an organisational audit leading to specific recommendations for how to implement the new role.
We completed the assignment in 3 months.
The client based the recruitment process and hired the successful candidate based on our talent profile.
The client implemented our recommended organisational adjustments, initially in the Northern European region and later expanded to the entire European organisation.
